Funkerman Interview from Gigsby on Vimeo.

This is an interview that you’re going to want to sit down and watch all the way through. To put it simply, Funkerman has seen it all. He started his career as a hip hop DJ and then made the jump to House music. Along the way he learned the ins-and-outs of the Electronic Music Industry by working at Record Shops, Booking Agencies and even some Record Labels. From there he teamed up with Raf and fellow Dutch DJ/producer Fedde le Grand to create Flamingo Recordings, a house and electronic-tech label that is currently one of the hottest imprints in the world.

In this interview, Funkerman discusses the importance of collaboration, understanding the music business, advice for young DJs, where he’s heading next and being sincere about the music.

Our favorite quotes:

Benjamin Bates made an album years back and the title was Never let anything kill the pleasure. That’s the most important thing if you want to be successful and not only commercially successful which is about the money; keep having fun in what you do.” [6:13]

“I saw the open mind that Electronic Dance Music had back then and that’s what really appealed to me…I still think we have a lot to learn and progress music wise. Also business wise, but music wise, I think House music has so much opportunity to progress. I hope there are enough ambassadors who are sincere about the music.” [10:56]

“I hope there are are more people like me who just want to progress the music. What I told you earlier, you have to look for collaboration with people who maybe have your own style or even other styles. That’s musical progression and that’s always good.” [12:06]

“Shitting on the music. Shitting on what we love. Please don’t shit on the what we love just to make money. That’s really important to me.” [12:25]
