Movers and Shakers Weekly Wrap Up – 12.15.09

By Baris on December 16th, 2009

Keeping tabs on the EDM industry is no easy feat, especially the latest artist popularity trends. Luckily at Gigsby we have some really talented ninjas who find true bliss in pouring over the latest artist trend data and analyzing those results till their blue.

With that I’d like to introduce our weekly Movers and Shakers wrap up. Basically we’re taking all the recent data supplied by Last.fm and turning it into a simple easy to read summary showing which artists’ popularity went through the roof and which ones slept through the previous week.

Oh, and we created some Boxing inspired peer groups so no one gets the undeserved KO. Here we go…

The HEAVYWEIGHTS (500,000+ listeners):

David Guetta was in a league of his own this week with a whopping 7.75% growth in his listeners. Compare that with 1% average growth among his peer group to put this incredible performance into perspective. Here is the top 5 fastest movers for the past week:

David Guetta 7.75%
The Prodigy 6.81%
Justice 1.44%
Daft Punk 1.26%
Cut Copy 1.25%

..And the sleeping beauty was Zero 7 with a mere 0.53% growth. Moving on….

The LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHTS (100,000-500,000 listeners)

Deadmau5 topped our list. No surprises there…

Deadmau5 3.48%
John Dahlback 2.73%
Flying Lotus 2.71%
Markus Schulz 2.28%
Busy P 2.05%

The sleeper cell this week in this category was Mylo with a sad 0.36% growth.

Now moving on to our 3rd Peer Group where competition heats up!

WELTERWEIGHT (10,000-100,000 listeners)

Sebastien Leger grew his listener base by a mind-blowing 22.3%. Compare that with average 1.24% growth in his peer group. Outstanding – we promise to investigate and get to the bottom of this. In the meanwhile, Mario Piu clocked in a phenomenal 15.35% which would have been absolutely earth-shattering in the absence of Leger. Here are the results:

Sebastien Leger 22.34%
Mario Piu 15.35%
John O’Callaghan 6.52%
Sebastian Ingrosso 6.26%
Agnes 6.22%

And last but not the least, Soul of Man was almost static with 0.19% this week.

The BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST (1,000-10,000 listeners)

Here we are, at the most exciting division where artists compete to see the light of the day. In this ruthless race for the limelight, let’s see who is making it:

Jesper Dahlback 199.69%
Mikael Stavostrand 136.28%
Jus-Ed 29.10%
The Scumfrog 23.77%
Pepe Bradock 21.83%

Jesper Dahlback tripled his number of listeners in 7 days. Speechless. Compare that with 2.7% peer group growth. Mikael Stavostrand was hot on Dahlback’s heels as he also more than doubled his listeners. Kudos guys!

And at the bottom of the pile were Alexi Delano and Andre Galluzzi, who were equally successful in keeping new listeners away. 0 points for 0 growth…

That’s all for the week, folks. We will keep observing and reporting for you.

ps: If you are a DJ and suspect you are not on our radar, please drop your last.fm link via email. We will add you to the list.
