Movers and Shakers Weekly Wrap Up – 12.22.2009

By Baris on December 23rd, 2009

Keeping tabs on the EDM industry is no easy feat, especially the latest artist popularity trends. Luckily at Gigsby we have some really talented ninjas who find true bliss in pouring over the latest artist trend data and analyzing those results till their blue.

Last week we introduced the Movers and Shakers Weekly Wrap up and promised to release it weekly. We’re sticking to that promise even in the midst of a last minute holiday shopping frenzy.

As a recap remember that we’re taking recent data supplied by Last.fm and turning it into a simple easy to read summary showing which artists’ popularity went through the roof and which ones slept through the previous week.

Oh, and we created some Boxing inspired peer groups so no one gets the undeserved KO. Here we go…

The HEAVYWEIGHTS (500,000+ listeners):

David Guetta continued  to be the growth leader of the pack with 1.72% growth in his listeners. Compare that with 0.71% average growth among his peer group. Here is the top 5 fastest movers for the past week:

1- David Guetta 1.72%

2- Justice 1.28%

3- Daft Punk 1.13%

4- Cut Copy 1.04%

5- Tiësto 0.94%

At the bottom of the list was Zero 7 continuing its uninspiring crawl at 0.46%. Moving on….

The LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHTS (100,000-500,000 listeners)

Timo Maas topped our list followed by Deadmaus with Flying Lotus (must play the arcade game!) and Busy P remaining on the list.

1- Timo Maas 3.10%

2- Deadmau5 1.88%

3- Flying Lotus 1.73%

4- Busy P 1.64%

5- Calvin Harris 1.64%

Squarepusher had a comfortable lead at the bottom with a sad, sad 0.24% growth.

Now moving on to our 3rd Peer Group where competition heats up!

The WELTERWEIGHTS (10,000-100,000 listeners)

Here we got a surprise. Last week’s superstars Sebastian Leger and Mario Piu apparently have taken a breather this week while  Sebastian Ingrosso  gained the lead closely followed by Agnes. Roll Deep and others.

1- Sebastian Ingrosso 5.99%

2- Agnes 5.46%

3- Roll Deep 4.21%

4- Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts 4.13%

5- Tydi 3.87%

And last but not the least, Heartthrob was almost static with 0.18% this week.

The BREAKTHROUGH ARTISTS (1,000-10,000 listeners)

Here we are, at the most exciting division where artists compete to see the light of the day. In this ruthless race for the limelight, let’s see who is making it:

1- Levon Vincent 17.93%

2- DJ Bone 9.31%

3- Cio D’Or  7.42%

4- Mogwli 6.79%

5- Dam-Funk 6.11%

Again, some surprises: Last weeks sprinters were this week’s laggers replaced by an entirely new set of artists. The growth leader Levon Vincent happens to be on Resident Advisor’s December Top 10 list with his “Double Jointed Sex Freak”, which is dissected  masterfully by Todd Burns here – for those who like their music with a dash of analysis. Compare Vincent’s phenomenal 18% growth with his peer group average of 1.08% to appreciate the positive impact of making into a list and receiving a review from RA. And it also comes with 426 new listeners on last.fm.

And at the bottom of the pile was Kenny Hawkes who was able to keep all new listeners away but one.

That’s all for the week, folks. We will keep observing and reporting for you.

ps: If you are a DJ and suspect you are not on our radar, please drop your last.fm link via email. We will add you to the list.
