Last week we posted about the top 10 electronic music festivals for August 2010 whole-heartedly embracing the RA’s list published earlier on. After taking a closer look at the most top heavy lineups in Pukkelpop, Sonne Mond Sterne, and South West Four Weekender (by the way, why don’t they pick some short and sweet names which people can actually remember and spell?), we’d now like to highlight one of the two festivals that offer the most entertaining experience outside of music.
Let’s start with RA’s top pick Burning Man. Not necessarily an electronic music festival (not even a music festival, for that matter), ”Burning Man is an annual art event and temporary community based on radical self expression and self-reliance in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada” as the official website describes itself. The event which started as a modest bonfire ritual in 1986 hosted over 50,000 participants in 2009 despite its off-the-beaten-path location (3 hours drive from the nearest airport in Reno, NV) and primal living conditions that by design lack basic conveniences.
Probably the only festival in the world with a “Survival Guide” (which is also required reading), Burning Man is truly a unique experience. Check out this year’s art theme here, browse some photos on the Web (you will find loads), and if you feel like unplugging for a little while at the end of summer, go participate in Burning Man in Black Rock City, Nevada – a town that exists for only 6 days a year.
