In Part 3 of our series on top 10 electronic music festivals for August 2010, we will present KaZantip (capital Z is intentional), a 3-week festival held every year in one of the uh,..unlikely places, the Crimean peninsula of Ukraine. You can use this map to locate this beautiful place on earth.
While no doubt it’s off the beaten path and takes a bit of effort to get there, it all gets very rewarding once you reach your destination. Lets take a look at this years episode to see what its got to offer. But first, a little bit of background:
The festival is named after the Kazantyp peninsula near which it was held from 1995-1999. It has modest and low-key origins as a party for windsurfers in the area. During that time the festival was held in an abandoned nuclear power plant. Over time, the festival evolved into the 10-dance floor, 15-bar & lounge, x00-DJ dance music extravaganza. More recently, the festival has been moved to the Crimean town of Popivka. It advertises itself as a “virtual republic” with over 150,000 visitors every year.

Once again held in Crimea between 31 July – 21 August this year, the self-acclaimed “ultimate rave republic” boasts 21-hours a day music and non-stop party for several weeks. There will be hundreds of DJ – we heard Carl Cox, Ricardo Villalobos and Josh Wink’s names- but it is absolutely futile to search for a “DJ lineup” for KaZantip because they do not announce much in advance. You just have to be there and experince “KaZantip”.
For those who need to hear/see more, here is a really cool short video documentary from VBS.tv “Raving in the Black Sea”. Start packing up already.
