Guide for Electronic Music Artists – Setting Up Bandcamp pt. 1

By Giovonni Lobato on July 30th, 2010

In this new age of digital technology, sometimes it’s tough for a hardworking Electronic Music artist (or his/her even harder working manager and promoter) to keep track of all the ‘in’ things to be doing! Should I be using PureVolume(meh)? What the heck is a Soundcloud? Isn’t Bandcamp for nerds?

Well, I’m here to help you out, with the first installment of the Guide for electronic music artists, entitled…

So You Wanna Use Bandcamp, Eh?

Bandcamp is the new big thing amongst angst ridden college musicians (like myself), but it has recently picked up steam, and become one of the go to websites for streaming, downloading, and buying great new music.

What really makes Bandcamp great is its easy to use interface, clean design, laid back attitude, customizability, and focus on the artist. Hopefully within this quick blog, I can show you how to set up and maintain your very own Bandcamp page(s), as well as give you some ideas on how to use the site and its features to promote your music, whether you are an unknown Dubstep DJ, or the biggest Trance producer in the world!

Step 1: Get a good email address

This is probably the easiest in a short list of easy steps… It doesn’t even need a screenshot! Go to Yahoo or Gmail, and you can get a free one, with all the storage space you’ll ever need.

A couple hints: Make it easy to remember and professional, no GogiGuy3876@Internet.Comnet. If you already have one in your name, make one for your artist name. If both are already taken, try adding “music” to the end of it. It’s simple, but it works 90% of the time!

Step 2: Make a Bandcamp account for yourself!

Register for Bandcamp.com

Go to www.bandcamp.com/signup, and sign the heck up! It’s easy and straightforward, just enter a Username, Password, the email you just created, a Band Name. You can also enter a genre and location here, which comes in handy if people are looking for your specific sound or some hometown music! Then be too lazy to read the terms, click agree, and hit sign up! You’re in! Congrats!

Bandcamp will then ask you to choose a specific domain name for your site… The address that the user will type in to find you. My hint is to stick with your band name if you can, but hey, it’s a free country!

That about covers it for part one of the Guide for Electronic Music Artists Bandcamp setup. I’ll be back next week with details on how to add music to your newly created Bandcamp account!

Best,

Giovanno
